Tempisque Expeditions grew from Christopher Montes’s connection to the landscapes and communities around the Tempisque River. His aim is to help travellers discover Guanacaste with more local context and respect.
Tempisque Expeditions was created in 2023 by Christopher Montes. The idea grew from his local knowledge of Guanacaste, his tourism background and his conviction that visitors should understand more about the places and communities they encounter.
Christopher grew up in a small community near the Tempisque River. Forests, rural communities and the river landscape were part of everyday life, not attractions encountered for the first time on holiday.
After school, he studied Sustainable Tourism Business Management at the Universidad Nacional in Nicoya. His studies gave structure to questions he had already seen around him: how can tourism support local families, protect natural resources and help visitors understand the place they are experiencing?

Many visitors know Costa Rica through its most famous parks and beaches. Guanacaste also has pottery workshops, community conservation projects, rural food traditions and landscapes whose stories are easy to miss without local context.
We explain what makes a place meaningful, how to prepare for a visit and what travellers should verify before they go.
Whenever possible, tours and recommendations should connect visitors with people who live and work in the communities they visit.
Clear information about wildlife, culture and practical conditions helps travellers explore with more care and fewer unrealistic expectations.
The project has evolved since its first version, but its purpose remains recognizable.

Tempisque Expeditions connects travellers with bookable cultural experiences, including visits in Matambú and a coffee experience in Guanacaste. Local partners carry out the activities, while Christopher coordinates enquiries and helps visitors understand what each experience includes.
The website also publishes practical guides about Guanacaste. These articles combine research with a local perspective and distinguish confirmed visitor information from details that can change, such as prices, access conditions and opening hours.
This approach allows the project to grow without losing the reason it began: helping people see more of Guanacaste than the obvious stops.
Responsible tourism is not a label added to an itinerary. It influences how an experience is described, who benefits from a visit and how travellers behave once they arrive.
For Tempisque Expeditions, this means working with local providers, presenting cultural experiences with respect, avoiding promises about wildlife that nobody can guarantee and encouraging visitors to follow the guidance of hosts and protected areas. It also means being transparent when information needs to be confirmed directly before a visit.
We will continue improving the website as we learn from local partners, travellers and the communities featured in our guides.
